2016 Cavell Gardens Year to date:

Is it just the bustle of our vibrant community that makes time appear to fly by? I don't know about you, but the first half of 2016 has gone by in a blur and it is only now, midway, that I can stand back and take stock of our year so far [and find time to update our blog!]

Not so good: New Years day 2016 bought with it a grotty flu virus that knocked the wind out of a number of our staff and resident's sails, leaving energy levels at a low and occupancy down, as some of our frailer residents moved on to a higher level of care. Those of us unaffected or in recovery rallied forces and kept the troops motivated and fighting the good fight. It is times like these when one realizes just how much of a family unit our little community is, everyone looking out for everyone else and ensuring that no one gets forgotten.

Better: With the poor start to the year things could only get better; in March we were awarded our Stars of Vancouver Readers Choice Award for Best Seniors Community[East side]. It is always such a treat to get recognition for one's efforts and it had a wonderful effect on both resident and staff morale and there was no looking back.

Best: Mid way through the year we find ourselves back in the swing. Our wonderful community is full yet again and with an influx of fun-loving  and active seniors it has added a fresh dynamic to our residence. As  a result not a day goes by without the communal spaces ringing with laughter and chatter. Every sunny day on offer sees a group of people playing Bocci or meeting up for group walks or outings. Our sunny benches on Sophia Street provide a hive of comings and goings as residents socialize with friends or any members of our multi-faceted Mt. Pleasant Community, who are fortunate enough to be passing by.

As summer takes hold and residents seek the shady warmth of our courtyard gardens, they have become used to the familiar sounds of our returning Mexican guests, Humming Birds. There is no better way to appreciate them than observing their feeding and antics whilst supping on your own choice of 'nectar' at a Friday afternoon Happy hour. Just ask any one of the regulars who support our end of week social!
Happy Summer Everyone!!
